Trainees and dual students from Einkaufsbüro Deutscher Eisenhändler GmbH recently visited Kinder-Tafel Vohwinkel as part of their first Social Day, where they helped prepare meals, played with the children and supported them with their homework. The aim was to do something good and make a meaningful contribution alongside their everyday work.
Wuppertal – As part of the trainee sustainability project, E/D/E trainees and dual students have already implemented many activities, such as creating a flowering meadow including an insect hotel on the E/D/E site. In addition to their commitment to the environment, the dedicated junior employees have now thought of a way to make a social contribution to the region in the name of E/D/E: seven trainees and dual students spent a day at the Vohwinkel children’s food bank. The E/D/E trainees and dual students provided active support, particularly with homework. “Support with schoolwork is a very important service offered by the Kinder-Tafel, as understanding, learning and practising lesson content is a major challenge for many children (and families). They get the support and encouragement they need here,” explains Iris Schemann at the Kinder-Tafel Vohwinkel.
Up to 30 needy children a day come to the children’s food bank, which is run by employees and volunteers. Every helping hand is urgently needed and so not only the children were happy about the E/D/E visit, but also the helpers at the facility.
In addition to preparing food, the program also included making origami together, playing tag, running around and a hike with donkeys. “We all really enjoyed helping the children and spending an enjoyable afternoon together,” reports Charlotte Suttmeyer from the sustainability department at E/D/E. “The Kinder-Tafel is like a big family where the children have a safe space to play with other kids and simply have a good time.”
E/D/E has been supporting the Vohwinkel children’s food bank in various ways for many years: Among other things, E/D/E financed a low ropes course for the children’s food bank at the “Sternpunkt” location and recently a suitable extension. As part of the “family and friends” employee referral program, some E/D/E employees chose the Vohwinkel children’s food bank as a suitable recipient of donations and visited the facility on site.
“We are delighted that our trainees and dual students are interested in social issues in addition to their day-to-day work on behalf of E/D/E and are getting involved in a meaningful way,” reports Jennifer Träptau, Sustainability Officer at E/D/E Group. “In this way, we can achieve something good together in the Wuppertal region.”
